DNA: The Code Of Life Flashcards
Cell
Basic structural and functional unit of life.
What is a cell made of?
A jelly like structure called the cytoplasm, surrounded by a cell membrane.
2 functions of cytoplasm
- Contains organelles
* All chemical and biochemical reactions occur in the cytoplasm
What is a ribosome?
Small spherical structures found in the cytoplasm.
Function of a ribosome
The area where protein synthesis takes place
What is a nucleus?
A spherical organelle bounded by a double membrane (nuclear membrane)
What are nuclear pores?
Nuclear membrane is perforated by pores (holes)
Function for nuclear pores?
To allow substances to move in and out of nucleus
Where is the hereditary material(DNA) found ?
Inside the nucleus are chromosomes that contain the DNA
Where is the nucleolus found?
Centrally in the nucleus
Function of Nucleus?
- Controls all chemical and biochemical reactions of the cell.
- DNA replication
- Contains genes( born on the chromosomes)
What are Organelles?
The living, membrane-bound structures found in the cytoplasm
