DNA Structure and Function Flashcards
What is the function of DNA
to store all of the genetic information that an organism needs to develop, function, and reproduce.
Three components of nucleotides
nitrogenous base, sugar, and phosphate group.
What is a double helix
Structure of DNA. Twisted ladder of DNA. Rungs are nitrogenous bases. Sides are phosphate and sugar.
Nitrogenous base pairs
Adenine and Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine.
Where is DNA located in the cell
Nucleus.
semi-conservative DNA
One new strand, one old strand combine into new DNA.
Anti-parallel DNA
Opposite direction strands (different sides of DNA)
How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have
23
Difference between Chromatin and Chromosomes
Chromatin: Made of DNA
Chromosomes : Made of proteins and RNA
Chromatin
Loose strands of DNA wrapped around histone protiens
Chromosomes
Made of tightly wound Chromatin
Difference between DNA and RNA
DNA is double-stranded, forming a double helix. RNA is single-stranded.
RNA has ribose, and uses uracil
DNA has deoxyribose and uses thymine
Charagaff
Base pairing rule
Watson, Crick, Wilkins
shared Nobel prize for discovering structure of DNA
