DNA Structure Flashcards
What is DNA?
DNA contains the information that determines inherited characteristics
What does DNA stand for?
D: Deoxyribo
N: Nucleic
A: Acid
What is a section of a strand called?
Nucleotide
What are the lines that connect the nucleotides called?
Covalent bonds
What do the DNA nucleotides contain?
1- sugar deoxyribose
2- a phosphate
3- one of the four nitrogenous bases
What are the nitrogenous bases? ( hint: there are four )
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Thymine
What nitrogenous bases are double-ringed?
Guanine (G) and Adenine (A)
What nitrogenous bases are single-ringed?
Thymine (T) and Cytosine (C)
What nitrogenous bases pair up and with how much hydrogen bonds?
Cytosine and Guanine bases pair up with 3 hydrogen bonds.
Thymine and Adenine bases pair up with 2 hydrogen bonds.
What are single-ringed bases called?
Pyrimidine
What are double-ringed bases called?
Purine
What is the structure of DNA called?
“Double helix”
What is the sides of DNA called?
Sugar-phosphate backbone
What are the lines in between the sugar-phosphate backbones called?
Strands
