DNA & RNA Flashcards
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next.
Double Helix
The twisted ladder structure of DNA.
Nitrogen Bases
Molecules that contain nitrogen and other elements.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
Adenine
A nitrogen base. It is abbreviated A.
Thymine
A nitrogen base. It is abbreviated T.
Guanine
A nitrogen base. It is abbreviated G.
Cytosine
A nitrogen base. It is abbreviated C.
Gene
A section of DNA molecules that contains the information to code for one specific protein.
DNA Replication
The process in which an identical copy of a DNA strand is formed for a new cell.
RNA
The generic messenger that carries the genetic code from DNA inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
Uracil
A nitrogen base found in RNA carries in replacement for thymine.
