Dna/ Rna Flashcards
What is gene expression?
The way in which information from a gene is forms a functioning protein product
What is a regulatory gene
Controls genes at a protein/ rna level
What is a gene?
A sequence of nucleotides that code for a specific type of DNA
What are the stages in protein synthesis and what do they do?
- Transcription- making mRNA
2. Translation- decoding mRNA
Describe the stages of transcription in protein synthesis
- Initiation- Rna polymerase binds to Dna at the promoter region
- Elongation- RNA polymerase unzips the DNA and adds complementary RNA bases
- Termination- RNA polymerase reaches a stop codon and RNA polymerase detaches and mRNA is released
Describe the basic procedure of genomes manipulation
- Plasmid of DNA is isolated
- Gene that is of interested is isolated
- Gene is inserted into plasmid to form recombined plasmid
- Recombined gene is placed into cell
- New cell is cloned
What is the main function of DNA
It stores the complete genetic information required to specify the structure of proteins and thus metabolic functions within the cell
What makes DNA and RNA unique?
They can direct their own replication
Why is DNA important?
DNA is the reason that there is a resemblance between offspring and their parents. If ha
