DNA Replication Flashcards
What is the purpose of DNA replication?
To create enough genetic material to be given to the daughter cells in cell division.
Identify the location, key steps and requirements for replicating DNA.
Takes place in the nucleus.
Steps:
1. Helicase uncurls double helix, breaks h-bonds between bases, splits strand in two.
2. Polymerase reads template strand, brings complementary bases from nucleoplasm.
3. Sugar phosphate backbone reforms, 2 identical new DNA strands are formed.

Why is it important to replicate DNA accurately?
Incorrectly replicating DNA can lead to mutations, which can sometimes be very harmful, and may mean that the cell is unable to function.
