DNA Replication Flashcards
Where does DNA Replication take place?
Nucleus
When does DNA replication take place?
During S phase (cell cycle)
What is the role of helicase?
Unwinds DNA double helix at the replication fork
What is single stranded binding proteins role?
Prevents separated strands of DNA from coming back together
Is single stranded binding proteins considered an enzyme?
No
What is the role of topoisomerase/DNA gyrase?
Relaxes DNA double helix from the tension and supercoiling
What is the role of primase?
Places the RNA primers at the origin of replication, initiating DNA replication
What is the role of DNA polymerase III?
Builds new DNA strand by adding nucleotides in 5->3 direction
What is the role of DNA polymerase I?
Removes RNA primer laid by primate & adds complementary DNA
What is the role of DNA Ligase?
Re-anneals semi-conservative strands & joins Okazaki fragments on the lagging strand
What is the role of telomerase?
-Synthesize telomeres
-Ensures the chromosomes do not shorten
-Use their own RNA primers
