DNA replication Flashcards
what does semi conservative mean in terms of DNA
that each daughter duplex has one parental strand and one new strand
explain the stahl experiment
wathc video on this
where does DNA polymerase add nucleotides to?
the free 3’OH -> 5’ to 3’ direction
where does DNA begin replicating
origins of replication
what do helicase enzymes do
they unwind the double helix by breaking hydrogen bonds between the base pairs of the parent DNA molecule- forms a replication fork where two strands of parental DNA is exposed
what is the leading strand
where synthesis is made continuously in the 5’ to 3’ directions
what is the lagging strand
replication made discontinuously in short segments in the 5’ to 3’ direction that will be joined together
what is an okazaki fragment
the short segments formed in the lagging strand
explain what primase enzymes do
a primer must be supplied to initiate DNA synthesis. it provides the free 3’OH which nucleotides are added to at the 3’ end. the primers are short RNA pieces and are laid down by the primase enzyme
