dna profiling Flashcards
who made dna profiling
alec jeffreys
describe the process of dna profiling
dna sample obtained and copied multiple times by pcr
dna is cut using restriction enzymes at specific sites
fragments are cut to produce different length dna from different people.
dna fragments are separated using gel electrophoresis.
short fragments (less tandem repeats) travel faster in the gel).
banding pattern in gel is seen through staining and can be compared with other people
what type of dna is used for this analysis
non coding dna/ short tandem repeates
cant use coding genes as they would show similarity between all people, e.g. people have the same genes to code for proteins.
what is a short tandem repeats
highly variable short repeated lengths of dna which vary between different people.
they are non coding dna
what process seperates short tandem repeat sequences
electrophoresis
what are the uses of dna profiling
identify war criminals
identify fossils and artifacts
paternity analysis
what is huntingtons disease
decay of brain cells. affects movement, speech and thought processes
if blood samples are taken at a crime scene, what part of blood tissue is the dna extracted from
white blood cells and they have a nucleus where as erythrocytes dont have a nucleus
