Dna Fingerprinting Flashcards

1
Q

What are small tandem repeats? Str markers o4 microsatellite dna

A

A unique set of genetic markers of an individual that makes its dna fingerprint and genetic profile and their presence or absence is determined mostly by PCR using specific primers for the marker

Q

Features of markers

A

Eukaryotic DNA contains some non coding sequences where two to six base pairs are repeated tandems (one after the other) 100 to 1000 times so that the lengths if these repats vary.

Since they r non coding variations do not have an impact in the phenotype

Q

Advantages of using Str markers

A

Occur frequently in the genome
Easily amplified by PCR
Highly variable polymorphisms
A large number of characterised STR r available
