DNA Damage, Repair, and Mutation Flashcards
What is a mutation?
A mutation is a change in DNA sequences that can be passed from one cell to its daughter cells.
What is a gene mutation?
A gene mutation is a mutation that is due to a change in the DNA sequences of a small segment of DNA that affects the DNA sequences of (at most) one gene
What is a forward mutation?
A forward mutation is a mutation that goes from WT version to not WT gene
What is a reverse mutation?
A mutation of non WT back to WT
True or False: Mutations can occur in any cell of the body.
True - Mutations can occur in any cell of the body.
What is a germline mutation?
If the mutation occurs in the reproductive cells, it can be passed from one generation to the next by sexual reproduction.
What are somatic/vegetative mutations?
Mutations in the non-reproductive cells of the body but they would NOT be passed to the next generation.
If a person inherits a germline mutation from their parents, then they have the mutation in their entire body.
Offspring would have BOTH a germline and somatic mutation.
