Q

Describe the components of a nucleotide in relation to DNA

A
  • pentose sugar is deoxyribose
  • each one has the same sugar and phosphate group, but the base varies
  • four possible bases: Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine

Q

Describe the components of a nucleotide in relation to RNA

Q

How do nucleotides join, and what do they form in doing so?

A
  • Join up via condensation reaction between phosphate group of one N and sugar of another.
  • Forms a phosphodiester bond (consisting of phosphate group and two ester bonds)
  • Forms a polynucleotide
  • Chain of sugars and phosphates is known as sugar-phosphate backbone

Q

What is complementary base pairing?

A
  • Adenine always pairs with thymine
  • Cytosine always pairs with guanine
  • So, theres always equal amounts of adenine and thymine in DNA molecule and equal amounts of C & G.
