DNA and DNA Extraction Flashcards
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid.
What is the DNA’s structure and what is it’s purpose?
Double Helix. It’s used as a mechanism to copy the molecule.
What does DNA do for the body?
It contains the instructions to survive and reproduce, it also synthesizes/produces proteins.
What are codons?
Codons are sequences that are decoded to create proteins.
How many base pairs make up a codon?
3
What makes up a nucleotide?
A phosphate, two deoxyribose sugars, and a base pair
Name two base pairs
Adenine-Thymine and Guanine-Cytosine
Name all the steps of DNA extraction
Lyse, Precipitate, and Purify
What is DNA extraction?
Extracting and isolating the DNA molecule to it’s purest form.
Why is DNA extraction important?
For identifying suspects, or other important evidence in a case.
What is lysing?
Breaking down the cell membrane to release the contents inside of it.
What is precipitation?
Forming a solid that separates from the solution which is removed by a centrifuge.
What is purifying?
Isolating the DNA in a substance .
What is a centrifuge?
The device that separates fluids of different densities or liquids from solids.
What is a buffer?
A substance (i.e water) to remove contaminants from the DNA sample and preventing it from degrading during the extraction process.
