DME Flashcards
What does DME provide the pilot with?
Slant distance between the aircraft and the ground beacon.
What are the two main aspects of DME?
- An airborne interrogator
- A ground based beacon
What is the theory of operation for the DME?
- An interrogator initiates an exchange by transmitting a pulse pair to the transponder ground station.
- Processor measures how long it takes for reflected signal to come back to the aircraft.
- Distance is measured.
Where is the DME controller usually located?
- UFCP
- FMC
What is the process to select a DME station?
1) Ensure DME and VHF- NAV sets are on
2) Select the appropriate VOR or ILS frequency on the VHF-NAV set
3) When a steady distance indication is shown on the DME, monitor the aural Morse code to confirm it is correct
What is a DME arc?
- A DME is an arc of a circle centred on a DME stérions
- Used to position an aircraft form an initial approach fix for an instrument approach or straight in approach.
What are some limitation of DME?
- Limited to Line of sight (LOS)
- Rated coverage for max distance.
