How did DLG view the coalition
He supported it, he knew the demands of total war and its effect on the country
In 1916 what did the conservatives do
They withdrew there trust of Asquith and wanted DLG to replace him as PM of the coalition
What did DLG propose
- He proposed the creation of a war cabinet consisting of DLG, Edward Carson and Bon-law.
- Asquith would remain as PM but not in the war cabinet
What events occurred in Dec 1916
3rd- Asquith resigned so the war cabinet could be formed
4th- The Times reveal War cab plans and negative comments about Asquith, this forcing DLG to resign
6th- George V asks DLG to become PM
7th- DLG persuades enough Cons to form Gov forcing Asquith and liberal ministers to resign
After December 1916 how was DLG viewed
Viewed as a traitor by the liberal party and they still recognised Asquith as there leader. Did say they would support the gov in conduct of war
Who did DLG now depend on
He relied on support from Conservatives, who tolerated DLG but never fully trusted him
