(persistent depressive disorder)
- dec mood for most of the day and for more days than not
- > 2yrs
- 2 other depressive Sxs
DDx: thyroid disease
what are the diagnostic requirements for PMDD
(premenstrual dysphoric disorder)
- > 5 depressive Sxs
- onset in final week before menses
- improves after onset of menses
- absent postmenses
list the manic Sxs
- inc self-esteem / grandiosity
- dec need for sleep
- extra talkative
- inc flight of ideas
- distractibility
- inc goal-directed activity
- inc involvement in activities with high potential of painful consequences
discuss diagnostic requirements for Bipolar
Bipolar I: at least 3 manic Sxs for >1 wk
Bipolar II: hypomania + MDD w/o manic episode
Cyclothymia: hypomania + depressive Sxs not sufficient for MDD or PDD
list the classic symptoms for psychotic disorders
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganized speech
- disorganized or abnormal motor behavior
- Neg. Sxs: diminished emotional expression, diminished purposeful activities (avolition)
briefly describe the range and categories of psychotic disorders
Depends of range of duration (short to long): brief psychotic episode –> schizophreniform –> schizophrenia
+ Mood disorder, depends of number of psychotic Sxs (most to least): Schizoaffective disorder –> mood disorder with psychotic features
list the two main anxiety disorders

- GAD
- Panic disorder

Life-threatening: PTSD, acute stress disorder
Not life-threatening: adjustment disorder
Neglect: reactive attachment disorder, social engagement disorder
list and define the clusters of personality disorders
A, wired: Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal; odd, eccentric, unable to develop meaningful relationships
B, wacky: Antisocial, Borderline, Narcissistic, Histrionic; dramatic, emotional, erratic
C, worried: Avoidant, Dependent, Obsessive-compulsive; anxious or fearful
list the define the Cluster A personality disorders
Paranoid- distrustful, suspicious
Schizoid- happy loner (doesn’t want a relationship)
Schizotypal- magical thinking w/o hallucinations, response to external stimuli
list the define the Cluster B personality disorders
Antisocial: criminal + lack of remorse
Borderline: rapid changes in mood, suicidal gestures
Narcissistic: inflated sense of worth and demands special treatment
Histrionic: theatrical, attention seeking, hypersexual
list the define the Cluster C personality disorders
Avoidant- loner fearing rejection and criticism
Dependent- fears being alone
Obsessive-Compulsive: rigid, perfectionist (note- no intrusive thoughts or forced compulsions)
