DLA 23: Connective Tissue Flashcards
Transcient cell population
1) Lymphocytes
2) Plasma cells
3) Basophils
4) Neutrophils
Permanent residents of connective tissue
1) Fibroblasts
2) Adipose cells
3) Macrophages/monocytes
4) Mast Cells
5) Mesenchymal stem cells
Fibroblasts
-Synthesize fibers and ground substance
- Fibroblasts = active
- Fibtocytes = inactive
- myofibroblasts = wound healing
Adipocytes:
Unliocular vs Multiocular
Uniocular Adipocyte
- One large “white” fat droplet
- Large fat inclusion (organelles nucleus pushed to PERIPHERAL of the cell)
- Major energy source (triglycerides)
- Rich blood supply
Multiocular Adiocytes
- Many “brown” lipid droplets
- CENTRAL nucleus
- Rich in mitochondria
- Lipochrome pigment
- Main functions:
1) Heat production - Specialized locations in the body neck, abdomen of neonates
Macrophages
-Derived from monocytes, migrate to connective tissue
- Macrophages in LIVER = kupffer cells,
- Macrophages in BRAIN = microglia
- Macrophages in BONE = oseoclasts
Mast Cells
-Originate in bone marrow
-Gain cytoplasmic granules when reach connective tissue
(Granules will stain another color different from metachromatic dye, also PAS positive bc glycoproteins nature)
-Mast cells and basophils both derived in bone marrow and circulate the blood
Lymphocytes
- Small/spherical
- Condensed basophilic nucleus
- Immune cells (B and T)
- B-lymphocytes develop into plasma cells
Plasma cells
- Derived from B-lymphocytes
- Synthesize and secretes glycoproteins (a immunoglobulin)
Eosinophils
- Red granules in the cytoplasm
- Condensed bilobed nucleus
- Phagocytosis of antibody
- Kills parasitic worms
Elastic Fibres
3 Stages of development:
1) Oxytalan
2) Elaunin
3) Elastic
Types:
1) Fibrillin (glycoproteins) + elastin (protein)
2) Elastin (Glycine, proline, lysine, desmosine, isodesmosine)
- Very elastic
- Found in large arteries, elastic cartilage, vocal ligament, bronchi, etc
-Requires Orecein, Resorcin, or Verhoeff’s staining
Interstitual fluid
1) Small quantity of H2O for solvation and diffusion
2) Edema- Body parts swell from injury or inflammation
