Hands at 9 and 3 or 8 and 4
Do not cross hands over the middle of the steering wheel
Keep hands in those positions even when turning
Hand over hand steering when you turn at low speeds, park, or need to recover from a skid
One hand steering: turning while backing up in 12 o clock position. Operating vehicle controls that require one hand.
Left turn hand position: straight out, Right turn hand position: right angle with arm up.
Slow or stop: right angle down.
Signal at least 100 ft, before any lane change, at least 5 seconds before lane change on freeway, before pulling next to a curb or away from curb, even when you dont see other vehicles, when you are almost through an intersection if you plan to turn shortly after.
Use horn: to avoid collisions, to warn traffic on narrow mountain roads at least 200 ft ahead.
Dim high beams at least 500 ft vehicle coming. Or within 300 ft of following. It is illegal to drive using only parking lights. When to use headlights: when it is too dark to see 1000 ft away, 30 min after sunset and 30 before sunrise, in adverse weather (low beam), mountain roads and tunnels even when it is sunny, road sign.
When you see a collision ahead: lightly tap brake pedal 3 or 4 times, use hand signal and hazards.
Two sets of yellow lines spaced two or more feet apart are considered a barrier. Cannot go over them at all unless there is a designated opening.
Single solid white lines mark traffic going in the same direction. Double solid white lines are also a barrier. Cannot cross double solid white lines.
Yield markings are white triangles facing you.
Fast lane (left): number 1, middle: number 2, then 3 etc.
Double center turn lane: you can only drive in it for 200 ft. Can drive in a bike lane within 200ft of a turn. signal 100ft before a turn.
May turn against a red light if you are turning from a one way to a one way.
May make a U-turn: across double yellow line, in a residential district with no vehicles approaching you within 200 ft, intersection with on a green light or arrow, on a divided highway. Never make a U-turn: at or on a railroad, divided highway by crossing a diving highway section, curb, strip of land or two sets of double lines. When you cannot see 200 ft in each direction, on a one-way street, in front of a fire station, Never use a fire station driveway to turn around, in business districts
Crossing or entering traffic: have enough space that is half a block on city streets or 150 ft and a full block on the highway about 300 ft
Do not pass if you are within 100 ft of an intersection, bridge, tunnel, RR crossing, or other hazardous area at crossroads or highways
When parallel parking find a space that is at least 3 ft longer than your vehicle. When you pull up next to the car have at least 2 ft space. Begin turning away from the curb when the rear wheel is 18 inches from the curb. Set parking brake after you succeed with parallel parking.
When straight line backing up, back up for three vehicle lengths
When a railroad crossing is not controlled, what is the speed limit when you are within 100 feet and cannot see for 400 feet in both directions?
15 mph.
What speed should you be driving when entering onto a highway?
At or near the speed of traffic.
