- The divorce rate more than doubled between 1969 and 1972 as a result of legal changes.
- It continued to rise sharply until 2000. Since then it has started to fall. This is mainly a result of the falling marriage rates as there are now fewer married couples so fewer people who can get divorced.Today 42% of marriages end in divorce.
- People tend to get divorced in their 40s and the average length of marriage is 8-10 years.
- In 2011,of all decrees granted to one partner, 66% were granted to the wife.
- In over half (54%) of the cases where the divorce was granted to the wife, the husband’s behaviour was the fact proven.
- Almost half (49%) of couples divorcing in 2011 had at least one child aged under 16 living in the family.
