divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
central nervous system (cns)
brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system (pns)
sensory and motor neurons that pass information to and from the cns through electrical impulses
somatic nervous system (sns)
one of the divisions in the pns, involved in primarily voluntary actions, also involved in involuntary reflex actions. controls skeletal muscles
autonomic nervous system (ans)
another division in the pns, involved in automatic and involuntary actions. nerves in this system arise in the brain and emerge from the spinal cord
parasympathetic nervous system
one of the divisions in the ans, slows down heart and breathing rate, it decreases blood flow to the muscles. it increases peristalsis and the production of intestinal secretions
sympathetic nervous system
one of the divisions in the ans, increases heart and breathing rate as well as blood flow to the muscles. it slows down peristalsis and the production of intestinal secretions
the parasympathetic vs sympathetic nervous system
have opposite effects on the body, therefore having an antagonistic effect
