division of the nervous system Flashcards
What is the nervous system
network of nerve system that can carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body
What is the CNS
CNS
l l
brain spinal cord
l l
complex info transports messages to and from brain
higher ordered
thinking decisions made
Left hemisphere job
control the right side of the body
right hemispheres job
control the left side of the body
Peripheral nervous system role
relay information via nerve impulses from rest of the body back to the cns
controls everything outside the cns
peripheral nervous system broken down into
somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
what is the somatic nervous system
it connects everything to the external world
consists of sensory receptors picking up external sensory neurons and delivered to cns
deals with language, wernicke’s area
motor neurons via the relay neurons
what does the autonomic nervous system do
regulates involuntary behavior
motor pathways only so only contains neurons
involved in homeostasis
what does the autonomic nervous system divide into
Parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems
What is the parasympathetic nervous system
getting the body back to homeostasis
hypothalamus
l
goes through the pituitary gland
l
release acth
l
the adrenal cortex then releases cortisol
what is the sympathetic nervous system
triggers fight or flight response
hypothalamus
l sends signal through nerve impulse
adrenal medulla
l
releases adrenaline and noradrenaline
