Division of nervous system pt2: lesson 18 Flashcards
1
Q
What did Cannon 1945 discover?
A
- model of stress
- realised chain of rapid reactions to deal with threat
2
Q
What is the fight or flight response?
A
- acute stress response
- triggered by release of adrenaline to prepare body to deal with stress
3
Q
What happens to trigger the fight or flight response?
A
- sympathetic nervous system activated due to hormone release
- sns stimulates adrenal gland triggering release of catecholamine
- heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate increase
- 20-60minutes after reaction body goes back to normal
4
Q
What are examples of fear responses?
A
- dilated pupils
- trembling
- rapid heart rate
5
Q
Why is the fight or flight response important?
A
- crucial to how we deal with stress
- triggered by real or imagined threats
6
Q
What is the endocrine system
A
Network of glands that secrete hormones
7
Q
What are characteristics of the endocrine system?
A
- blood vessels deliver hormones
- delayed compared to NS
- last longer
- maintains homeostasis
8
Q
How does negative feedback happen?
A
1) hypothalamus sends releasing hormone to pituitary gland
2) pituitary secretes simulating hormone
3) target gland releases hormone
4) target hormones gland levels increase
5) hypothalamus and pituitary stop secreting
6) target gland releases hormone
