Divine Attributes Flashcards
Omniscience omnipotence incompatible:
Dawkins - god intervenes, but knows he will, so can’t not, so not omnipotent
All all powerful:
Descartes - can do the logical impossible
Can do the logically possible:
Aquinas - can’t make an unliftable stone cause that doesn’t Make Sense, just words, so can’t be done
Omnipotence - has to follow the laws of the universe:
Vardy - is interacting with the universe, so has to follow the rules
God is perfect and that includes morality:
Anselm - if god is the greatest then it must be the most moral
Eternal present:
Boethius - everything is happening now, think of it spatially to make sense of it
Watcher:
Boethius - guy sat on a bench, looking at a guy walking - sun is simple necessity, just how the universe works, walker is conditional - he’s necessarily walking cause he Is, but it was a result of a choice, if he wasn’t walking it wouldn’t be necessary - overall watcher can’t change either so god can’t do shit
God was eternal until universe creation:
Craig - doesn’t really make sense cause can’t be fully timeless if you can become within time
4d:
Anselm - 4d is time, timelessness, whole new dimension thing
God isn’t timeless:
Swinburne - god can’t distinguish events by time if it’s timeless, so doesn’t make sense (also unbiblical but ehhh)
God isn’t timeless or a lot of Christianity is ruined:
Hasker - if god can’t answer prayers, it’s a bit shit, also messes up Jesus as a thing
