Considered a masterpiece of world literature, it is a poem in hendecasyllables divided into three canticles.

Plot of the work
Dante-character’s journey to the three realms of the afterlife. The otherworldly universe is built, by means of a precise architectonic scheme, on astronomical knowledge based on the Aristotelic-Tolemaic geocentric system
Hell
-World of the damned.
-It is divided into circles.
-The damned suffer torment reminiscent of the sin they have committed (law of opprobrium).

Purgatory
-Mounting rising from the waters of the southern hemisphere.
-Its summit is home to the Earthly Paradise.
