What is unconscious bias?
Prejudice in favour of one thing or person as opposed to another, in a way that is usually considered unfair. E.g. gender bias or age bias.
What is the importance in creating accessible and inclusive environments?
- An industry that creates and inclusive and accessible environments is better for society overall - surveyors work within communities so could represent the communities we work in.
What is an accessible and inclusive environment?
An environment that works better for everyone in society.
Opportunity to create environments that reflect the diversity of people who want to use them.
They are:

- responsive to people’s needs
- intuitive to use
Why is it important to have an accessible and inclusive environment?
- To build stronger communities and tackle social disadvantage
- U.K.’s rapidly ageing population
- Economic growth - for example, a member of staff at my firm left to take care of an older family member. Inclusive environments can allow people to maintain independence in their own home.
- Legally - we have to under Equality Act 2010.
- Business - if we have a more accessible and inclusive environment, can encourage wider range of skills and people to join workforce
What is the primary legislation for inclusive design?
The Equality Act 2010 - public sector equality duty. Public bodies to consider impact of policies.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 - risk assessment for the safe evacuation of disabled users.
Part M of the Building Regulations (V. 1 and 2) - ease of access to and use of buildings including facilities for disabled visitors/occupants and ability to move through building easily including toilets’.
BS8300 - relates to best practice for audience seating, sanitary facilities etc.
S.8 NPPF - healthy, inclusive and safe spaces.
What is a reasonable adjustment?
It is an adjustment made to make sure that workers with disabilities or physical or mental health conditions are not substantially disadvantaged when doing their jobs.
Includes changing the way that things are done, adapting physical features or providing auxiliary aids or services.
What is an inclusive environment?
Is an environment that facilitates dignified, equal and intuitive use by everyone, not physically or socially separating, discriminating or isolating. It accommodates and welcomes diverse users’.
