Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Flashcards
Equity
Policies or actions aimed at securing a more equal workplace, going beyond simple legal access or passive nondiscrimination
Equal Opportunity
The commitment to equal access regardless of gender, race, or ethnic background. Policies described as colour-blind or gender-blind are examples.
Inclusion
Making people feel welcomed, valued, and able to participate fully
Business Rationales
- Employers should push for DEI
- Diversity expands the pool for qualified applicants and leads to stronger workforce
- Improve company culture
Ethical Imperatives
- Companies are realizing the value for diversity and inclusion
- Companies may have ethical obligation to ensure fair opportunities for disadvantaged groups
- There are ethical arguments for and against affirmative action policies
Level Playing Field
- Historical factors like racist policies have
created disparities - Contextual factors like access and upbringing are not equal
- Personal conditions affect outcomes
- Laws, policies and norms benefit the majority population while disadvantaging minorities
Structural Bias
Inequalities don’t just come from how people are treated differently; they also stem from bigger systems and structures that keep these inequalities going.
Social Justice
Everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities
Shared Inequity
Addressing racial disparities requires fair but unequal treatment as well as sharing the burden of existing inequities. Those benefiting most from structural racism should proportionately share the burden until disparities are substantially eliminated.
Collective Responsibility
Groups bear moral responsibility for harms, though groups are not guilty. Fairness sometimes requires unequal treatment to
counterbalance narrowly dispersed injustice
Unequal Treatment
- We can be responsible for the things we aren’t guilty of (e.g. climate change)
- Inequity can be justly shared: Giving attention one group means less for another, which can be an acceptable cost
