Workpalce diversity:
Any characteristic used to distinguish people. Like age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, education, physical appearance, capabilities, disabilities, values, personality
Diversity management
The process and programs by which managers make everyone more aware of and sensitive to the needs and differences of others.
Surface level
differences in easily perceived characteristics, such as gender, race, ethnicity, age, or disability. It does not necessarily reflect the way people think or feel but that may activate certain stereotypes
Deep level
Differences in values, personality, and work preferences that become progressively more important for determining similarity as people get to know one another better
Diversity is an organizational resource that can boost competitive advantage: (2 reasons)
- Different people have different points of view, different resources. If you get them sit together, let them communicate well, you have a whole brained balanced diversity, you are more likely to solve the problem well, to have more creative way to solve the problem,
- Most of times, your customer base is also very diverse. In order to know what your customers or clients need, what their preferences are, you need to have representatives of them in your organization. You want to have a diverse employee base that can help you understand the world outside, understand your customers.
Stereotype threat
the degree to which we internally agree with the general negative stereotyped perceptions of our groups.
Discrimination
note a difference between things. Not necessarily bad.
Ethical imperative
diverse people must receive equal opportunities and be treated fairly.

Type of discrimination: Discriminatory policies or practices
Actions taken by representatives of the organization that deny equal opportunity to perform or unequal rewards for performance
Type of discrimination: Sexual harassment.
Unwanted sexual advances and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that create a hostile or offensive work environment
Type of discrimination: Incivility
disrespectful treatment, including behaving in an aggressive manner, interrupting the person or ignoring his or her opinions
Type of discrimination: Exclusion
exclusion of certain people from job opportunities, social event, discussion or informal mentoring; can occur unintentionally
Type of discrimination: Mockery and insults:
jokes or negative stereotypes; sometimes the result of jokes taken too far
Type of discrimination: Intimidation
Overt threats or bullying directed at members of specific groups of employees
