Who does IDEA apply to?
Students with disabilities - one of the 13 categories listed under IDEA.
What is IDEA?
A law passed that states that all students can learn, and outlines the requirements for making this happen.
What is a 504 plan?
A 504 plan aids students with learning disabilities by making accommodations for them such as a quiet area to study, sitting in the back of the classroom, etc. it can be given to any student with any disability that inhibits normal learning activities.
What is an IEP?
Individual Educational Plan for students with receiving special education. Must be formed by a meeting with parents, teacher, special ed teacher, district representative, and principal.
What are Specific Learning Disabilities?
- Dyslexia
- Discalculia
- Written Expression Disorder (Disgraphia)
What categorizes “Other Health Imapairment” as a disability?
Learning disabilities such as ADHD which affect strength, energy, or alertness.
What are emotional disturbances?
GAD, depression, bi polar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, etc.
What is Orthopedic Impairment?
Physical impairments that impair function in the body, as with Cerebral Palsy
What are intellectual disabilities?
A lower than average IQ, Down syndrome, etc.
What are the steps to getting an IEP for a child?
- Receive a diagnosis of a disability from a professional such as a physician
- Ensure child is in one of 13 eligible categories of disabilities under IDEA

- Flexible instruction
- Mixed ability grouping

What is Acculturation?
An individual’s adjustment to a new culture, while also retaining culture beliefs, customs, and native language.
What is RTI?
Response to Intervention - part of the IDEA Act.
