Diversification Flashcards
1
Q
anagenesis
A
species formation without branching of the evolutionary line of descent
-does not contribute to diversification
2
Q
cladogenesis
A
the formation of a new group of organisms by evolutionary divergence from a common ancestor
3
Q
What separates species allowing for allopatric speciation?
A
- glaciation
- have happened repeatedly throughout history (5X!)
-ice sheets create a barrier, isolating species on either side of it
- plate tectonics
- The location of the Earth’s continents have changed over time
- rivers
- Land can separate aquatic species, rivers can separate terrestrial animals
4
Q
evolution of guenons
A
The barriers created during glaciations caused fragmentation of guenon habitat, which lead to the diversity of guenons seen today
5
Q
Where does the ice in glaciers come from?
A
- Mostly from the ocean, stored on continents in the form of ice
- Increases in ice cover lead to decreases in sea level
- The newly exposed land acted as a physical barrier to many marine organisms
6
Q
Human factors altering evolutionary processes for primates
A
- deforestation
- fragmentation
- climate change (changes in temp affects rainfall)
- invasive species
