Diuretics Flashcards
What are the different types of diuretics?
High-ceiling loop, thiazide, potassium-sparing, osmotic
High ceiling loop diuretics
(-ide), furosemide, butenamide, torsemide, ethacrynic acid
Emergency
Where do high ceiling loop diuretics work?
Work in loop of Henle
High ceiling loop diuretics funky stuff
Can cause: ototoxicity, photosensitivity, hyperuricemia, hypokalemia
Give at rate 20 mg/min
Thiazide diuretics
(-thiazide), hydrochlorothiazide, chlorothiazide, methylclothiazide, metolazone, chlorothalidone, impamide
Maintenance
Where do thiazide diuretics work?
Work in distal convoluted tubules
Thiazide diuretics funky stuff
Dont take diuretics past 1400
Used for high K+
Potassium-sparing diretics
Spironolactone, amiloride
Potassium up, sodium down
How do potassium-sparing diuretics work
Work on aldosterone
Cause potassium retention and sodium excretion
Potassium sparing diuretics funky stuff
K+ goes up, Na+ goes down
No renal patients
Causes hyperkalemia
Osmotic diuretics
Mannitol
How do Osmotic diuretics work?
Reduce brain pressure
Osmotic diuretic funky stuff
For brain swelling
Causes hyperkalemia
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
(-zolamide), Acetazolamide, methazolamide
How do carbonic anhydrase inhibitors work?
Reduce eye pressure
