Diuretics Flashcards
List four classes of diuretics
Loop diuretics Thiazide K-sparring Osmotic carbonic anyhdrase inhibitors
Provide two examples of loop diuretics
furosemide, bumetanide
What is the MOA of loop diuretics?
inhibits Na/K/2Cl symporter in thick ascending limb, resulting in massive NaCl excretion, Ca and K excretion
What are the side effects of loop diuretics?
hypokalaemia, met alkalosis, hypovolaemia
Example of thiazide diuretic?
bendroflumethiazide
What is the MOA of bendroflumethiazide?
inhibits NaCl co-transport in DCT, resulting in moderate NaCl excretion and increased Ca reabsorption
Name three side effects of thiazide diuretics
hypokalaemia, hyperglycaemia, increased urate
Two examples of K sparring diuretics?
spironolactone, amiloride
What is the MOA of spironolactone?
aldosterone antagonist
MOA of amiloride?
blocks DCT/CD luminal Na channel
SE of K sparring diuretics?
hyperkalaemia, antiandrogenic (gynaecomastia)
Example of osmotic diuretic?
mannitol
What is the indication for mannitol?
Increased ICP
