Distribution xylem and phloem Flashcards
3 reasons plants need transport system?
large size
metabolic demands
small sa:vol
how does size impact need plant transport system?
water absorbed soil + light absorbed from above but both needed all over plant so needs to be transported
- large distance to travel
how does metabolic demands impact need plant transport system?
- cells in roots need glucose for respiration but it is made in leaves + needs waste products removed
- ions for synthesis large mols need to go to all cells
how does small sa:vol impact need plant transport system?
can rely on diffusion so needs transport system
what is vascular bundle?
xylem + phloem
- structure + transport
vascular bundle in stem?
several on outside for support of stem to prevent bending (in ring shape going all the way round)
xylem inside ( in dicot)
cambium has meristem cells (always divide)
vascular bundle in roots?
- central with drill like structure to enable plant to push down into root to withstand tugging from wind
- Xylem strongest so in centre X like structure
vascular bundle in leafs
xylem on top of phloem
midrib is main vein and gives support
branching smaller veins spread out and give support and transport to leaf
(think T shape for cross section)
