distribution of life Flashcards
abiotic and biotic niches sampling techniques
What are some Abiotic factors?
Ph, Light Intensity, temperature and moisture
how to measure light intensity?
Use a light metre and hold at surface of soil and point in direction of maximum light intensity
problems with measuring light intensity?
standing in front of the light metre causes shade and can get an inaccurate reading.
how is temperature measured?
air temperature can be measured using thermometer
soil temperature can be measured using a probe
what is the problem with using a probe?
soil residue can be left on the probe causing inaccurate readings of not wiped properly
how can soil Ph and moisture be measured
with a probe going into the soil
what does Abiotic factor mean?
non living variables that influence where organisms can live
what does Biotic factors mean?
are living factors
what are some biotic factors?
predation, grazing, disease, competition for resources and food availability
Biotic sampling techniques?
pitfall traps and quadrats
what are indicator species?
species that indicate the environmental quality and pollution levels by their presence and or absence
what is a niche?
an organisms role in the ecosystem
