Glacial environments

What is a glacial environment?
An areas of land permanently covered by ice - glacier or ice sheets
What are glaciers?& what are the two main types?
Masses of ice that flow downhill
Valley glaciers - fill valleys are are several kilometres long
Corrie glaciers- smaller glaciers found in the bowl shaped hollows high up in mountains
Where are glacial environments found?
High altitudes and latitudes
What is a periglacial environment?
Environments where the temperature is frequently below freezing BUT NOT COVERED BU ICE
What do periglacial environments contain a layer of?
Permafrost (permanently frozen ground)
What is an alpine environment?
Cold areas of land at an altitude above the tree line where it’s too cold for tress to grow
What are the two types of polar environment?
The arctic and Antarctic
