Distinctive Landscapes Flashcards
How has human activity and management impacted your river
Floodwalls and Embankments
-10 km raised flood defenses along River Eden which contains the water within the channel
Planting Trees
-1000 trees planted in Dalston to reduce flooding, erosion and surface run off
Human activity
-Human activity increases surface run off which in turn increases the volume in the river
What are the Landforms in each course of your chosen river
Upper- waterfall (Hell Gill Force)
Middle- meanders and oxbow lakes (Salkeld)
Lower- floodplains (Carlisle)
How is a V-shaped valley formed
1.Upper course is fast flowing river
2.Following heavy rain and high turbulence rough material is picked up and carried along sea bed
3.They scrape which causes vertical erosion by abrasion
4.Valley sides begin to weather (Freeze-thaw weathering)
5.Weathered material falls down into channel causing further erosion by abrasion
6.River doesn’t have energy to sideways erode so continues to vertically erode deepening the river
