distance, displacement, speed and velocity Flashcards
speed, mass, distance and time are all examples of what physical quantity?
scalar
velocity , weight, momentum, acceleration, force and displacement are all examples of what physical quantity?
vector
How is velocity different from speed?
Speed and velocity are both measurements of the rate of travel. Speed tells us the rate at which an object is moving. Velocity tells us the rate at which an object is moving in a specific direction.
which is a vector quantity speed or velocity?
velocity (remember both start with a ‘v’!)
if there are 2 cars, both travelling at 0.5 m/s but one is moving north and one is moving south, what is the same and what is different?
their velocity is different but their speed is the same
what is displacement?
the distance moved in a straight line, in a given direction, from the starting point (distance in a given direction)
if an object goes 5m east and then 5m west what is its displacement?
0m, it will be back at its origin point
give an example of when an object might have a constant speed but varying velocity
on a ferris wheel (any example when
changing direction but remaining at a constant speed)
out of the following which is scalar and which is vector:
a) velocity
b) displacement
c) speed
d) distance
vector= velocity & displacement
scalar= speed & distance
how can something have a constant speed but changing velocity?
if it’s moving in a circle
a car travels 16m east, 25m south, then 16m west
a) what is the distance travelled by the car?
b) what is the displacement of the car?
a) 57m
b)25m
