distance, displacement, speed and velocity Flashcards
which are scalar and which are vector?
S-distance and speed
V-displacement and velocity
what is the equation that links distance travelled, speed and time?
distance travelled (m) = speed (m/s) x time (s)
s=vt
what is distance?
how far an object has moved, DOESN’T involve direction
what is displacement?
the distance and direction in a straight line from an object’s starting point to its finishing point
what is your distance and displacement if you walk 5m north, then 5m south?
distance-10m
displacement-0m
what is the distance between speed and velocity?
Speed is how fast you are going with no regard to the direction e.g 30mph. Velocity is speed in a given direction e.g 20m/s, 060°.
how can an object be travelling at a constant speed but have a changing velocity?
if it is changing direction whilst staying the same speed
describe the speed and velocity on an object moving in a circle
the speed is constant but it has a constantly changing velocity (as the direction is always changing)
what are the typical speeds for a person walking, running and cycling?
walking-1.5m/s
running-3m/s
cycling-6m/s
what are the typical speeds for a car, train and a plane?
car-25m/s
train-55m/s
plant-250m/s
what is the equation that links speed, distance and time?
speed=distance/time
s=d/t
