Why does DIC occur?

A
  • Due to systemic rather than local activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis
  • Triggered by many causes

What occurs in DIC?

A
  • Microthrombus formation throughout vasculature
  • Microthrombus causes consumption and degradation of platelets, coagulation proteins and anticoagulants
  • Also causes ischemia which leads to multi-organ disorder (MODs)

  • APTT
  • PTT
  • ACT
  • Decrease in platelet numbers and ATIII
