Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy Flashcards
1
Q
What type of hemosatic disorder is DIC?
A
*It is a secondary hemostatic disorder
2
Q
Why does DIC occur?
A
- Due to systemic rather than local activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis
- Triggered by many causes
3
Q
What occurs in DIC?
A
- Microthrombus formation throughout vasculature
- Microthrombus causes consumption and degradation of platelets, coagulation proteins and anticoagulants
- Also causes ischemia which leads to multi-organ disorder (MODs)
4
Q
What will you diagnostic tests demonstrate for a patient in DIC?
A
Increases in:
- APTT
- PTT
- ACT
- Decrease in platelet numbers and ATIII
- Schistocytes on blood smear
5
Q
what are the common secondary diseases related to DIC?
A
- Neoplasia
- Immune mediated hemolytic anaemia
- Infectious disease - sepsis
- Shock
- Heatstroke
- GDV
- Pancreatitis
- Severe trauma
