dispersion Flashcards
define dispersion
process by which white light is separated into its component colors (spectrum) as it passes through a transparent material
what are the colours of white light
combination of red orange yellow green blue indigo violet
each has a different optical density and wavelength
explain dispersion
When white light enters a prism, it slows down and bends due to refraction.
Each color of light has a different wavelength and therefore travels at a slightly different speed in the glass. This difference in speed causes each color to bend (refract) by a different amount.
which colour bends the most and the least
Violet light bends the most because it has the shortest wavelength and highest frequency
red light bends the least due to its longest wavelength and lowest frequency
total internal reflection
when the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle causing the ray to refract back into the original medium
define critical angle
defined as angle of incidence that causes an angle of refraction of 90
conditions for tir
angle of incidence is greater than critical angle
light ray must be travelling from a dense medium to a rare medium
(higher to lower)
instruments using tir
prism periscope
fiber optics - fiber optics so more signal can be carried with less energy loss
medicine - endoscopes fiber optics from light into required area to monitor
if diamond is too shallow
light escapes from sides causing diamond to lose brilliance
creates opaque and glassy look
if diamond is too deep
light escapes from bottom causing diamond to appear dull and lifeless creating a black center when viewed from above
if diamond perfectly cut
maximum amount of light is refracted through top of diamond
real and apparent death explainedq
as light rays leave water bend away from normal bc denser to less dense medium
on entering eye appear to come from a point above actual position of object
gives appearance that object is closer to surface than it is
what kind of image is produced from real and apparent depth
virtual
