2
Q

what are the colours of white light

A

combination of red orange yellow green blue indigo violet
each has a different optical density and wavelength

3
Q

explain dispersion

A

When white light enters a prism, it slows down and bends due to refraction.
Each color of light has a different wavelength and therefore travels at a slightly different speed in the glass. This difference in speed causes each color to bend (refract) by a different amount.

4
Q

which colour bends the most and the least

A

Violet light bends the most because it has the shortest wavelength and highest frequency
red light bends the least due to its longest wavelength and lowest frequency

A

when the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle causing the ray to refract back into the original medium

6
Q

define critical angle

A

defined as angle of incidence that causes an angle of refraction of 90

7
Q

conditions for tir

A

angle of incidence is greater than critical angle
light ray must be travelling from a dense medium to a rare medium
(higher to lower)

Q

instruments using tir

A

prism periscope
fiber optics - fiber optics so more signal can be carried with less energy loss
medicine - endoscopes fiber optics from light into required area to monitor

if diamond is too shallow

A

light escapes from sides causing diamond to lose brilliance
creates opaque and glassy look

Q

real and apparent death explainedq

A

as light rays leave water bend away from normal bc denser to less dense medium
on entering eye appear to come from a point above actual position of object
gives appearance that object is closer to surface than it is
