Disorders of the Pulmonary System (week 10) Flashcards
what is dyspnea?
Difficulty breathing
what is orthopnea?
dyspnea upon lying down
what is paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea?
suddenly awakening at night feeling SOB ->same reason as orthopnea
what is hemoptysis?
coughing up blood
restrictive lung diseases are related to
difficulty with inhalation and decrease O2
a high V/Q is what happens if the person haves difficulty with
perfusion
a low V/Q is what happens if the person haves difficulty with
ventilation
restrictive disorders with low V/Q
a. chest wall restriction
b. airway restriction
c. pleural restriction
1) _pleural effusion— extra fluid in pleural space
2) pneumothorax—presence of air in the space between the lung and chest wall (aka in the pleural space)
d. lung tissue restriction:
1) pneumonia—acute infection of the lower respiratory tract caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites
e. pulmonary edema—excess water in alveoli
f. lung cancer (AKA bronchogenic carcinoma)—arise from epithelium of respiratory tract (lung is also the site of metastasis for many other types of cancer)
