Disorders of the Outer Ear and TM Flashcards
Outer ear and TM disorders cause ….
Conductive hearing loss
Excellent speech understanding
What is anotia?
Malformation of the outer ear
Missing pinna
What is microtia?
Malformation of the outer ear
Abnormally shaped pinna
What are preauricular pits, sinuses, appendages (tags)?
Malformation of the outer ear
Abnormally formed portions of the pinna
What is stenosis?
Abnormal narrowing of a passage of the body (ear canal)
What is atresia?
Closure of a normally open body orifice (closed ear canal)
What is excessive cerumen? Causes?
Considerable wax buildup without significant hearing loss
Most common disorder of the outer ear
Causes: cerumen pushed down the ear canal beyond where it can move out, individual variables like stenosis
Excessive cerumen can cause ….
Treatment ….
CHL, otalgia, dizziness/vertigo
Treated with ear drops, irrigation, removal
What is a foreign object?
Things in the ear canal that should not be there
What is a collapsing ear canal?
Partial or complete closure of the ear canal when pressure is applied to the pinna
Occurs most in older adults and infants (have soft ears)
Collapsing ear canal presents as …. (on the augdiogram)
High frequency CHL with normal type A tymps
What is an osteoma?
True bony growth, usually unilateral
What are exostoses?
Multiple bony growths, bilateral
Usually seen in swimmers who are frequently in cold water
What is otitis externa?
Infection of the outer ear (pinna and/or ear canal)
May not cause hearing loss
Managed with medication/medical intervention
What is a TM perforation?
Tear or hole in the TM due to trauma or excessive pressure build up in the middle ear
Degree of CHL depends on size of the perforation
