depressive disorders
the group of disorders marked by unipolar depression
major depressive disorder
a severe pattern of unipolar depression that is disabling and is not caused by such factors as drugs or a general medical condition. the presence of five or more symptoms during the same two-week period.
premenstrual dysphoric disorder
a disorder marked by repeated experiences of significant depression and related symptoms during the week before menstruation.
dysthymic disorder
a mood disorder that is similar to but longer-lasting and less disabling than major depressive disorder. depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, for at least two years.
electroconvulsive therapy
a treatment for depression in which electrodes attached to a patients head send an electrical current through the brain, causing a convulsion
disruptive mood dysregulation disorder
severe recurrent temper outbursts manifested verbally and/or behaviorally that are grossly out of proportion in intensity or duration to the situation or provocation. this has been lasting 12 or more months and should not be made before 6 years or after 18. onset before 10 years
SSRIS selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
a group of second-generation antidepressant drugs that increase serotonin activity specifically, without affecting other neurotransmitters
cognitive therapy
a therapy developed by aaron beck that helps people identify and change the maladaptive assumptions and ways of thinking that help cause their psychological disorders
cognitive behavioral therapy
a 4 stage therapy that increases activities and elevating mood, challenging automatic thoughts, identifying negative thinking and biases, changing primary attitudes.
interpersonal psychotherapy
a treatment for unipolar depression that is based on the belief that clarifying and changing one’s interpersonal problems will help lead to recovery
couple therapy
a therapy format in which the therapist works with two people who share a long-term relationship
bipolar disorder 1
a type of bipolar disorder marked by full manic and major depressive episodes. lasts at least a week and present most of the day.
bipolar disorder 2
a type of bipolar disorder marked by mild manic and major depressive episodes. lasts about 4 days.
cyclothymic disorder
a disorder marked by numerous period of hypo-manic symptoms and mild depressive symptoms.
