Disorders of blood Flashcards
Abnormal excess of erythrocytes in the blood
Polycythemia
results from a cancer of bone marrow that generates too many erythrocytes
Polycythemia vera
increased of the viscosity of the blood, which slows or blocks the flow of blood through the smallest vessels.
Severe Polycythemia
Erythrocyte levels or hemoglobin concentrations are low. Blood’s capacity for carrying oxygen is diminished
Anemia
Results from a defective hemoglobin molecule, Erythrocytes distort into a sickle shape, A slight change in the primary structure of a protein affects its ability to function, The substitution of one amino acid for another in hemoglobin causes sickle-cell disease
Sickle cell
a defect in the hemoglobin molecule that causes the abnormal hemoglobin to crystallize when the concentration of oxygen in the blood is low or the erythrocyte become
dehydrated, as during exercise or anxiety.
Sickle cell
A state in which the current oxygen supply is inadequate for the current physiological needs of tissue.
Ischemia
Abnormal excess of iron
Hemochromatosis
causes the body to absorb and store too much iron. The extra iron builds up in the body’s organs and damages them. Without treatment, the disease can cause the liver, heart, and
pancreas to fail.
Hemochromatosis
A large number of immature leukocytes
Leukemia
a form of cancer resulting from the uncontrolled proliferation of leukocyte-forming cell lines in the bone marrow.
