What is a behavioural characteristic of OCD
Compulsions (repetitive rituals) performed as a result of anxiety caused by obsessions
EG: repeating certain words when passing a post box
Emotional characteristic of OCD
Intense anxiety (unpleasant physiological arousal) and distress caused by obsessions
EG: feeling foolish that you think your family may die
Cognitive characteristic of OCD
Obsessive, irrational, persistive and intrusive thoughts, images or urges that repeatedly enter the mind
EG: family will be murdered by an intruder if I don’t check the lock 20 times
Behavioural characteristic of depression
Avoiding social events and/or activities previously enjoyed
Change in activity, sleep, eating
Emotional characteristic of depression
Low mood affecting feelings of self-esteem and pleasure
EG: intense sadness and worthlessness
Cognitive characteristic of depression
Irrational, negative beliefs about the self, the world, and the future
EG: everyone hates me and i will never be liked
Behavioural characteristic of phobias
Avoidance of the phobic stimulus or remaining in the presence of the stimulus (freezing)
EG: not going on holiday if you have to cross a bridge
Emotional characteristic of phobias
Intense physiological feeling of fear
EG: dread and terror at the thought of public speaking
Cognitive characteristic of phobias
Irrational beliefs about the phobic stimulus and resistance to rational argument
EG: spiders will kill me
