Dislocations and Strengthening mechanisms Flashcards
What are 3 strengthening Concepts?
Grain size effect, Solid solution hardening, Strain Hardening.
what is strain hardening?
a ductile metal becomes harder and stronger as it is plastically deformed. it is sometimes called work hardening.
what does %CW stand for?
% Cold Work
what is Solid solution hardening?
alloying with impurity atoms that go into either interstitial or substitutional solid solution.
what is grain size effect?
reducing the grain size can increase a materials strength through having more grain boundaries.
what happens after material deformation?
stored energy needs to be released.
how can the stored energy be released? there are options
Corrosion, Spring back, Recovery, Re-crystallization.
