Dislocation Flashcards
What is crystal orientation?
Refers to orientation of the crystal lattice with respect to a coordinate system fixed in the sample.
What are the angles of misalignment?
-High angle grain boundary (obtuse)
-Low angle grain boundary (acute)
What are dislocations?
1D or line defects in crystals which are responsible for low yield stress
What are the types of dislocations?
-Edge dislocation
-Screw dislocation
What is dislocation motion?
Within metals, plastic deformation occurs by a slip where an edge dislocation (extra half plane of atoms) slides over an adjacent plane (half plane of atoms)
What is the dislocation density?
The total dislocation is the length per unit volume or the number of dislocations that intersect a unit area of a random section.
What is a slip plane?
The plane on which the easiest slippage occurs.
+Highest planar densities of atoms and large interplanar
spacings
What is a slip direction?
The direction of movement in which slip would occur, has the highest linear density
