Disinfection Flashcards
What are the three levels of disinfection?
Sanitation
Disinfection
Sterilization
What does general practice include?
Hand washing,
Use of personal protective equipment, and proper disinfection to prevent cross-contamination
What is general practice?
Prevent the spread of disease and kill certain or all microbes
What is sanitation?
Lowest level of infection control and Physical removal of debris, which reduces the number of microbes present
What are sanitation guidelines?
Wash hands with liquid antibacterial soap before and after each service
2. Sanitize all surfaces before and after each service
3. Provide hot and cold running water at all times
4. Provide clean restrooms with well-stocked liquid soap, toilet tissue and paper towels
5. Provide disposable drinking cups
What are Disinfectants?
chemical products used to destroy or kill bacteria and some viruses
What are Broad Spectrum Disinfectants?
group of disinfectants that kill bacteria, viruses, fungi and pseudomonas
What are Bactericidals?
Kill harmful bacteria
What are Tuberculocidals?
Kill tuberculosis
What are Fungicidals?
Destroy fungus
What are Virucidals?
Kill viruses
What are Pseudomonacidals?
Kill pseudomonas
What does OSHA stand for?
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION
What does OSHA do?
enforces safety and health standards in the workplace
• Has put regulations such as Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) and labeling of products in place
What is EPA stand for?
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
What does EPA Do?
Approves efficacy of products used for
infection control
• EPA-registered number ensures product is safe and effective
What is 2001 OSHA BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS STANDARD?
Requires use of an EPA-registered disinfectant with an efficacy against HIV and HBV or tuberculocidal
What is a MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS)?
Provides key information on a specific product regarding ingredients, associated hazards, combustion levels and storage requirements
What is sterilization?
Most effective level of infection control
• Kill or destroy all microbes
• Required only for implements used for invasive procedures
What is a UV LIGHT STERILIZER?
Utilizes UV light to kill bacteria in a dry setting
• Used for storage of disinfected implements
What is an AUTOCLAVE?
Pressurized, steam-heated vessel that sterilizes objects with high pressure and heat
What is CHEMICLAVE?
Machine that sterilizes surgical instruments with high- pressure, high-temperature water vapor, alcohol vapor and formaldehyde vapor
