Diseases of the respiration system Flashcards
Tuberculosis
An infectious bacterial disease characterized by the growth of nodules (tubercles) in the tissues, especially the lungs.
Hypertension
Also known as high or raised blood pressure, is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure.
Aortic aneurysm
Is an abnormal bulge that occurs in the wall of the major blood vessel (aorta).
Stroke
Occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die in minutes.
Emphysema
Is a lung condition that causes shortness of breath. The air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) are damaged. Over time, the inner walls of the air sacs weaken and rupture – creating larger air spaces instead of many small ones
Lung Cancer
Is a disease in which lung cells grow out of control.
Peripheral Arterial Disease
Damaged to or dysfunction of the arteries resulting in reduced blood flow.
Asthma
Is a chronic disease involving the airways (tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. These airways are inflamed. The inflammation makes the airways very sensitive and the tubes often react to allergens
Chronic bronchitis
Is the inflammation (swelling) and irritation of the bronchial tubes. These tubes are the airways that carry air to and from the air sacs in your lungs. The irritation of the tubes causes mucus to build up.
Arteriosclerosis
Refers to the build-up of fats, cholesterol, and other substances, in and out your artery walls plaque) which can restrict blood flow. The Plaque can burst triggering a blood clot.
COPD
The intersection of three related conditions — chronic bronchitis, chronic asthma and emphysema, Chaisson told Live Science. It is a progressive disease that makes it increasingly difficult for sufferers to breath.
