what’s a luekoplakia?
white oral plaque that doesn’t conform clinically to any dx
when can leukoplakia’s risk for developing into cancer be highest?
when on ventral tongue, mouth floor & soft palate - all non-keratinized sites
what are risk factors for leukoplakia?
smoking, alcohol, areca nut habit, hx cancer, immunosuppression, age (same as SCC)
what’s field cancerization in oral squamous cell carcinoma?
multiple individual primary tumors develop independently in upper aerodigestive tract as result of yrs of chronic exposure of mucosa to carcinogens
where could oral squamous cell carcinoma metastasis?
locally: cervical LNs
Distant: mediastinal LNs, lungs, liver, bones
describe HPV oral lesions
painless, exophytic, papillary/verucous, white/pink, sesile or pedunculated
usually in young pts
what’s squamous papilloma HPV lesion look like?
soft palate or tongue, white or pink
what’s verruca vulgaris HPV lesion look like?
gingiva, lips, palate, usually white
what’s condylomata HPV lesion look like?
single or multiple, papular or papillary, often seen in immunocomp’d
what does candidiasis oral lesions look lke?
white papules/plaques
what’s angular cheilitis and what’s it assoc w/?
pain, cracking, fissuring and maceration of the corners of the mouth, assoc w/ candidiasis infection
what’s the histo/path of herpes simplex virus?
ulcer, epithelial cells at edge of ulcer exhibit Multinucleation, Margination of chromatin, nuclear Molding, ground glass nuclei, amphophilic cowdry inclusions
what’s the histo/path of amphthous lesions?
fibrin membrane w/ enmeshed neutrophils, underlying granulation tissue, inflammation in lamina propria
