Sudden onset respiratory distress w/open mouth breathing, frothy pink oral+nasal d/c, febrile, YOUNG pigs affected. Dx?
Pleuropneumonia (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae)
Gram - coccobacillus
Can poliarthritis, bronchopneumonia, sepsis, meningitis in nursing or recently weaned pigs
Streptococcus suis
More of an individual, small group problem
Sneeze, cough, lacrimation. Affects YOUNG pigs 3-6 weeks of age.
Atrophic rhinitis
Persistent dry cough
Mycoplasma pneumonia
(Enzootic pneumonia)
More of a chronic problem
Acute onset of respiratory distress, oral/nasal d/c (not blood tinged), affects ALL AGES.
RAPID SPREAD
Swine Influenza
Big pig dies acutely after trying to collect blood. Turned blotchy & resp distress. Dx
Porcine Stress Syndrome (PSS)
Recessive genetic myopathy
No clx sx’s, just acute death pigs +/- 4 was old. Necropsy polyserositis. Top differentials?
Streptococcus suis OR
Haemophilus parasuis (true ER… most likely cause death)
Tx ex Ceftiofur ASAP to all remaining pigs
Not currently in US, cause systemic and enteric problems, not associated with pneumonia
Classic Swine Fever
Pigs <8wks old depressed, anorexic, lethargic. Brown exudative spots skin of the head, axillae & groin. Some of the lesions brown to dark crusts. Dx?
Staphylococcus hyicus ("Greasy pig dz) YOUNG <8 weeks old pigs
3wk old piglets, alternating lameness, swollen joints, febrile. Necropsy–> fibrinopurulent pleuritis, peritonitis, pneumonia, neuro sx, pericarditis, meningitis. DX?
